CHAPTER ONE

1.0 INTRODUCTION
This project is on the design and implementation of automatic change over and how it can be used to change from one power sources to the other automatically. The design comprises some arrangement that senses the power failure form either of the power sources and drives the electro mechanical switching device (relay) that is capable of changing two poles (live and neutral) to give out light or be on stand by to generator side.

1.1 BACKGROUND
As technological advancement has been on the increase in our society many have fallen in love with technology and wants to have a feel of modern technology in virtually to every thing they do.
A design have been made in combination of electrical and electronics to change over from one power sources to the other automatically without many operation.
Electronic components such as relay transformer diodes were used thereby making the project less expensive for the implementation of the project and commercial application.
Moreso the cost suitability and availability of the required components for the project circuitry were some of the major factors considered by the designer

1.2 AIM/OBJECTIVES
To design a circuit that will automatically change over from main power supply (PHC) to power generating set and vice versa with the help of electro mechanically switching device that is being controlled by electronics component

1.3 SCOPE/SIGNIFICANCE
This project design can be used to transfer power sources to the other automatically. The design could also be used in other application apart from changing power sources once there is a well though arrangement

1.4 PROJECT REPORT ORGANIZATION
The project report has been organized into five chapters for orderliness and easy understanding of the information on the report design.
Chapter one contains introduction design objectives/aim scope/significance of the report and report organization
Chapter two dealt on system component analysis literature review and theories/modules of design.
Chapter three contains the system design description of the system building blocks system specification block diagram and the description of the overall operation of the system.
Chapter four describes the implementation testing and results of the project.
Chapter five finally dealt on the cost analysis calculation and recommendation for further improvement and ended with a page for references .

Automatic Change Over with Generator Trip Off typically refers to a system that involves an automatic transfer switch (ATS) and a generator in the context of power supply. Here’s a breakdown of the key components and the process:

  1. Automatic Transfer Switch (ATS): An ATS is a device that automatically transfers power supply from the main source (such as the utility grid) to a backup source (like a generator) when it detects a failure or interruption in the main power supply. ATS ensures a seamless transition to the alternative power source.
  2. Generator: This is the backup power source that is typically used when the main power supply fails. It could be a diesel generator, natural gas generator, or another type of power generation system.
  3. Changeover Process:
    • Normal Operation: During normal operation, the facility or system is powered by the main electricity grid.
    • Power Interruption Detection: When the ATS detects a failure or interruption in the main power supply, it initiates the changeover process.
    • Transfer to Generator: The ATS triggers the switch to disconnect from the main power supply and connects to the generator. The generator starts up and begins supplying power to the system.
  4. Generator Trip Off: In some cases, if there is an issue with the generator (e.g., a fault, overload, or any other problem), the generator may automatically trip off. This means that the generator shuts down to prevent damage or further issues.
    • Detection of Generator Trip Off: The ATS or a separate control system monitors the status of the generator. If a trip off is detected, it signifies that the generator is no longer supplying power.
    • Return to Normal Operation or Alternate Source: Depending on the system design, the ATS may attempt to restart the generator or switch back to the main power supply if it has been restored. Alternatively, there may be provisions for manual intervention to address the generator issue before attempting to switch back.

The goal of this setup is to provide uninterrupted power supply during mains power failures and to ensure that the system can revert to the main power supply once it’s restored or address any issues with the generator. The automation in the process minimizes downtime and ensures a reliable power supply in critical applications.
