ABSTRACT

In developing countries, electricity distribution to final consumers stands chances of failure due to epileptic power supply. Most times, failure can come from the electric power provider or problems with poor electrification of a building. Power supply and failure is a frequent experience that occurs in our mains. Power restoration is a period of time when the electricity supply to a particular building or area is restored. In times of power supply, it is necessary to be notified of such restoration as a smart response in order to put off the alternate power source. For the effective operation in times of power supply, a Global System for Mobile Communication (GSM) based Short Message Service (SMS) notification system was developed. The system was tested and was found to work satisfactorily. This paper, therefore, presents the design and implementation of a GSM-based SMS power supply alarm system.

CHAPTER ONE

1.0                                          INTRODUCTION

1.1                            BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY

In contemporary society, it is impossible to live without electricity as most modern equipment requires a continuous supply of electric power. In periods of power outage [1], industries simply switch to other available sources of power supply so as to maximize profit and reduce downtimes. This is not only seen in industries but also in the household [2]. For network service providers, an uninterrupted power supply is needed for their proper operation.

In most critical applications [3], uninterrupted power supplies (UPS) are used. These devices cannot provide continuous operation in the event of a prolong period of power outage. In an ICT Network Operation Center, working shift arrangements is a regular scene for the purpose of proper monitoring and management of the day-to-day network challenges and in the event of power supply that might occur.

Many studies have found positive effects associated with the use of a GSM-based SMS notification systems [4, 5]. Hence, the need for an automated SMS based power supply notification system for homes, offices and industries. A power supply notification system can be installed for timely notification and monitoring of the electric power status. The idea of an SMS based warning system was proposed owing to the fact that mobile phones have become popular communication devices amongst people all over the world. While there are fewer than 7.2 billion people, the number of active mobile phone devices currently stands at 7.22 billion [6]. SMS is one of the most widely used means of communication around the world which is used by more than half of world’s population [7].

In this paper, a GSM-based SMS notification system is implemented on an Android device capable of sending SMS text messages. The smartphone device is connected permanently to the power source through a wall socket and any power supply  is detected.

1.2                                                  PROBLEM STATEMENT

Power failure in homes, offices and workplaces can be irritating, frustrating and devastating, affect our appliances and at the same time affect the happiness of the occupant. It is quite unfortunate that sometimes when power is supplied the occupant will not be aware especially when there is no power indicator. In other to overcome this problem, this device was designed. This device is designed to inform the user when power is supplied via GSM (SMS) alert.

1.3                                   AIM AND OBJECTIVE OF THE PROJECT

The main aim of the project is to build a GSM based power supply alarm system that will alert the user whenever there is mains supply using GSM technology. The objectives of the work are:

  1. To build the prototype of the system model
  2. To save energy
  • To interface GSM module with arduino

1.4                                         SIGNIFICANCE OF THE PROJECT

Working on this device will serve a means of reminding the user on which action to take when power is supplied – either to switch ON devices or shut down devices.

This study will also serve as a means of becoming familiar with GSM module and arduino.

1.5                               SCOPE AND LIMITATION OF THE PROJECT

The scope of this work covers building a  power supply monitoring device that will trigger a buzzer when the mains is supplied in other to inform people around and at the same time send SMS alert to the user using GSM module, and arduino microcontroller as the heart of the circuit.

The scheduled recipient will get alerts anywhere from the system through the GSM technology thus making the system location independent and reliable. The SMS based power supply notification system is very easy, user friendly and has many software features.

The developed system was tested with the available mobile network and internet connection to ascertain its effectiveness.

1.6                                         METHODOLOGY

To achieve the aim and objectives of this work, the following are the steps involved:

  1. Study of the previous work on the project so as to improve it efficiency.
  2. Draw a block diagram.
  • Test for continuity of components and devices,
  1. Design of the alarm was carried out.
  2. Studying of various component used in circuit.
  3. Construct the circuit.
  • Finally, the whole device was cased and final test was carried out.

1.7                                        PROJECT WORK ORGANISATION

The various stages involved in the development of this project have been properly put into five chapters to enhance comprehensive and concise reading. In this project thesis, the project is organized sequentially as follows:

Chapter one of this work is on the introduction to the study. In this chapter, the background, significance, objective limitation and problem of the study were discussed.

Chapter two is on literature review of this study. In this chapter, all the literature pertaining to this work was reviewed.

Chapter three is on design methodology. In this chapter all the method involved during the design and construction were discussed.

Chapter four is on testing analysis. All testing that result accurate functionality was analyzed.

Chapter five is on conclusion, recommendation and references.
