ABSTRACT

The growth of manufacturing industries largely depends on rate of production with better quality. To reach these requirements it is essential to develop a modern tools. In modern machine tool applications the performance of a machine tool is judged by its strength. The machine tool spindle has a profound impact on the overall machine performance. The work presented here provides machine tool – shaft spindle which aimed at developing a shaft spindles that are sufficiently stiff to meet their need. The shaft spindle is designed in cylinder block of cast iron material. After designing the shaft spindle 3D model was created by using the CATIA software.

1.0                                                        INTRODUCTION

1.1                                          BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY

In machine tools, a spindle is a rotating axis of the machine, which often has a shaft at its heart. The shaft itself is called a spindle, but also, in shop-floor practice, the word often is used metonymically to refer to the entire rotary unit, including not only the shaft itself, but its bearings and anything attached to it (chuck, etc.) (Hoffman et al., 2011).

A machine tool may have several spindles, such as the headstock and tailstock spindles on a bench lathe. The main spindle is usually the biggest one. References to “the spindle” without further qualification imply the main spindle. Some machine tools that specialize in high-volume mass production have a group of 4, 6, or even more main spindles. These are called multispindle machines (Hoffman et al., 2011).

A mechanical shaft is a rotating member, usually of a circular cross-section, either solid or hollow, which transmits power and rotational motion.

The main aim of the study is to fabricate a shaft spindle using catia v5. The objectives of the project are:

This study will serve a means of assessing students competency in creativity. During the course of study, the student is put on a sound theoretical foundation of various mechanical engineering subjects and of course, to a satisfactory extent. Opportunities are made available to him to work on different kinds of machines, so that he is exposed to various kinds of manufacturing process.

This study shall serve as a means of making student to become technologically stronger.  The student involve shall attain a stage of perfection, when he himself is able to design and fabricate a device.

1.7                                                SCOPE OF THE PROJECT

A spindle is a rotating shaft with a fixture for holding a tool (in the case of a milling, grinding, or drilling spindle) or a workpiece (in the case of a turning spindle). The shaft spindle serves as a support, a positioner, and a rotary drive for the tool or workpiece. The scope of this work covers fabricating this device using catia V5 software.

This report discusses the necessity of the project and various aspects of planning, design, selection of materials, fabrication and testing.

5.1                                CONCLUSION AND RECOMMENDATION

5.1     CONCLUSION

In current research work, design and fabrication of shaft spindle was carried out which is used for drilling hole of Ф14.25 mm with 178 mm depth. After designing, 3D model of shaft spindle was created in CATIA V5R20 software and finite element analysis was carried out using solid works software in static condition. The obtained value of von Mises stress is 9.2516 × 106 N/m2 which is less than yield tensile strength of the spindle material. Also, maximum displacement in the shaft spindle is less than theoretical value of maximum permissible displacement. Hence, design is safe.
