ABSTRACT

Infrared thermometry is a mature but dynamic technology that has gained the respect of many industries and institutions. It is an indispensable technique for many temperature measurement applications, and the preferred method for some others. The study is on an infrared based temperature measuring device which uses MLX90614 as Infrared Temperature Sensor . The device utilizes a MLX90614 Infrared Temperature Sensor to detect an object’s temperature without any contact at all and to also sense the ambient temperature surrounding this sensor. The results will be displayed in both, degrees Fahrenheit and degrees Celsius on the serial monitor. Many real-world applications uses an infrared temperature sensor to either be an aid for the user or for autonomous monitoring, and some of those applications include: body thermometers, fire detectors, water heaters, room heaters etc.

CHAPTER ONE

1.0                                                        INTRODUCTION

1.1                                           BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY

A thermometer is a device that measures temperature or a temperature gradient. A thermometer has two important elements: (1) a temperature sensor in which some physical change occurs with temperature, and (2) some means of converting this physical change into a numerical value (e.g. the visible scale that is marked on a mercury-in-glass thermometer). Thermometers are widely used in industry to control and regulate processes, in the study of weather, in medicine, and in scientific research.

In daily life, the measurement of body temperature is a basic way to determine the normal life of the human body. Although the price of traditional mercury thermometers is cheap , the existing problems are as follows when it is used: Mercury thermometer must contact with the human body , and temperature measurement process need lasted 5 to 10 minutes, because infants is active, let parents become very headache for infant body temperature; And in the number of temperature meter reading, easy to read wrong due to external light and other factors; Mercury thermometer is easy to rupture when heated or stored improperly, It can lead to mercury poisoning due to human body exposure to mercury [1]. Infrared temperature sensor is used for measuring temperature, The measurement trouble of the traditional contact thermometer is avoided. It is especially suitable for infants and young children to measure the body  temperature ,and the measured temperature is displayed by the liquid crystal display module, it is accurate, and it has the function of voice broadcast, it is convenient for the people with poor eyesight. The main aim of this work is to build an infrared thermometer which is a thermometer which infers temperature from a portion of the thermal radiation sometimes called black-body radiation emitted by the object being measured. This permits temperature measurement from a distance without contact with the object or to be measured.

This configuration facilitates temperature measurement from a distance without contact with the object to be measured. As such, the infrared thermometer is useful for measuring temperature under circumstances where thermocouples or other probe type sensors cannot be used or do not produce accurate data for a variety of reasons.

Some typical circumstances are where the object to be measured is moving; where the object is surrounded by an EM field, as in induction heating; where the object is contained in a vacuum or other controlled atmosphere; or in applications where a fast response is required.

Infrared thermometers allow users to measure temperature in applications where conventional sensors cannot be employed. Specifically, in cases dealing with moving objects ( i.e., rollers, moving machinery, or a conveyor belt), or where non-contact measurements are required because of contamination or hazardous reasons (such as high voltage), where distances are too great, or where the temperatures to be measured are too high for thermocouples or other contact sensors.

1.2                                                  PROBLEM STATEMENT

Traditionally, thermometer was made to be used and read by making contact with the patient or an object which is to be tested and this wastes lot of time, inefficient and at the same time can expose users to contagious diseases. Also, temperature Sensors like DS18B20, LM35 & MAX6675 are only sense the temperature when the heat is applied to them directly on their surface. But if you wish to measure the temperature of a very hot body like a flame or hot iron, one can’t rely on these sensors.

In order to realize object temperature fast and non-contact measurement, an infrared thermometer is designed. We need some sensors that can measure the temperature without any contact & sensing the temperature through IR is the best method. For this, you can use the MLX90614 infrared thermometer from Melexis for this project. The MLX90614 sensor uses contactless temperature sensing to measure the temperature data without any physical contact to particular surface.

1.3                                      AIM / OBJECTIVES OF THE PROJECT

The main aim of this work is to build an infrared based thermometer which is a device used to measure the temperature of any object or living body and displays the reading. A thermometer scale can be in Fahrenheit or Celsius. The objectives of the study are:

  1. To build the prototype model of the system
  2. To maintain high level of hygiene when taking measurement
  • To ensure efficient and accuracy of measurement.

1.4                                              PURPOSE OF THE PROJECT

The main purpose of this work is to carry out a temperature measurement without making contact with the object to be measured.

1.5                                         SIGNIFICANCE OF THE PROJECT

Non-contact: No contact guarantees the best hygiene, thereby greatly reducing the risk of being tested and the operator being infected by bacterial viruses.

Efficient and accurate: Simple operation non-contact sensitive, no need to wait accurate measurement.

infrared sensor: Self-develop infrared module accurate to 0.2 celsius stable, fast and accurate strong adaptability 5.5cm infrared filter wide measurement range.

Smart power saving: Supports automatic shutdown Two AAA batteries can be used more than 3000 times.

1.6                                         APPLICATIONS OF THE PROJECT

Medical Applications: The non-contact thermometers are used to measure human body temperature around 37⁰C. These thermometers are mostly probe type or ear type. It measures oral, rectal and arm pit body temperature.

Marine Applications: non-contact thermometers with high temperature exhaust gas sensor as the temperature sensor can be used in marine applications for measuring the local temperature.

Industrial Applications: non-contact thermometers are also used in power plants, nuclear power plants, blast furnaces, ship building industries etc. They can measure temperature from -220⁰C to +850⁰C.

1.7                                                 SCOPE OF THE PROJECT

The scope of this study covers building an Infrared Thermometer using MLX90614 Infrared Temperature Sensor & Arduino Board. It displays the temperature reading on SSD1306 0.96″ OLED Display.

1.9                                        PROJECT WORK ORGANISATION

The work is organized as follows: chapter one discuses the introductory part of the work,   chapter two presents the literature review of the study,  chapter three describes the methods applied, chapter four discusses the results of the work, chapter five summarizes the research outcomes and the recommendations.
